Sherri pulled open the door to Dr. Grant’s office office and looked around. She hadn’t been in the building in years, not since Dr. Grant’s daughter left for college. Not much had changed. Even the receptionist looked familiar, but Sherri couldn’t quite recall the woman’s name until she got close enough to read her badge. “Hi, Pam. I’m Sherri London. Lucky has an appointment.”

She hadn’t realized that taking a pet to the doctor required almost as much paperwork a human doctor visit did, and soon found herself filling out forms . She’d barely finished when Lucky was called. The office had changed a little since her last visit, mostly the color of the walls and different flooring, but the various sounds of the animals mingling with the bustle of the staff made the place feel like a home of sorts. She’d often wondered if she’d been better off in Veterinary science instead of physics. The room she and Lucky were shown to was clean and cherry and she set the little pet case on the floor next to her chair while they waited. A few minutes later, the door opened and Sherri popped up. “Jena? When did you get here?”

The other girl met her in the middle of the room for a hug. “I was hoping it was you. How have you been?”

“I’m good. I’m running the B&B now that Grandad and Gram moved to Florida. Are you here for spring break?”

“No, I graduated. My grandfather wants to retire at the end of the year and I’m going to take over the practice.”

“That’s wonderful. I’m having some people over next Tuesday. You should come. We’re painting a couple of rooms at the B&B. You can supervise and visit with us. Do you still eat pizza?”

“I practically lived on the stuff for the last six years. Of course I do.”

“Great. Everyone will be happy to see you.”

The new Dr. Grant smiled. “When did you get the kitten?”

“I found it near a dumpster the other night. The mom was trying to save it from some dogs. She didn’t make it.”

“Oh, no. We really need to find a solution for all those critters running around town. Let’s take a look at this little fur ball.”
